Stoughton Media Access has teamed up again with the Stoughton Public Schools to organize a live spelling bee featuring students from all five of Stoughton's elementary schools - the Dawe, Gibbons, Hansen, South and West.

The 3rd Annual SMAC All-School 5th Grade Spelling Bee will be held Thursday, June 14 at 7pm at the Stoughton High School Auditorium. The Bee will be broadcast live on Comcast 6 and Verizon 26 in Stoughton. It will also be shown on Facebook Live on the SMAC Facebook page. The public is also welcome to attend and cheer on the students in person, free of charge.

​After holding preliminary spelling contests, each school is sending four participants to the Bee, for a total of 20 students. These students will be partaking in some friendly competition, vying to become champion and win bragging rights for their school:​​

Jayden Coleman from the Dawe School won the first SMAC All-School 5th Grade Spelling Bee in 2016. Mazie Loayza from the South School won the bee last school year.

The following students will be competing to win the bee this year:

• Gibbons - Sofia Issa, Darryn Jolly, Peighton Mofford, Kiara Yaitanes
• Hansen - Eric Bussey, Caroline Flannery, Ava Kaplan, Narumi Makamura
• South - Jake Buckley, Maya Eisenstein, Sivannah Marcy, Arielle Rothman
• West - Emily Barnhart, Chalyssa Headlam, Derek Hu, Sienna Lourenco

Julie Linehan, a teacher at the O’Donnell Middle School, will serve as the moderator. The judges will be Pat Basler, the director of the Stoughton Public Library, and Eileen Sprague and Ashley Goldstein, both Humanities Curriculum Administrative Supervisors for the Stoughton Schools.

This year, the participants will be receiving prizes thanks to the generosity of the Stoughton Media Access Board of Directors, Fred Yaitanes and Nadine Israel of The Fred & Nadine Team Realtors, HarborOne Bank, Daddy’s Dairy and Camelot Enterprises.
